(i) on Economic Development: Cook, Culp Talk 2018 Indiana Legislative Session and Key Takeaways

Posted 2:44 PM by

On the most recent (i) on Economic DevelopmentTim Cook and Katie Culp join Gerry Dick to discuss Indiana’s top economic development news stories, including the chaotic end to the 2018 Indiana General Assembly, legislative takeaways from the session, and the upcoming special session in May.

On the show, Cook credits the passage of Senate Bill 257, exempting sales of software-as-a-service (SaaS) from state sales tax, as a major win for Indiana’s tech community. Culp points out another win from the session – one that has garnered significant media attention – Sunday alcohol sales and its potential impact to attract employers.

A topic that has been a focal point in Indiana and one that received mixed results during this session was workforce development. Culp notes that workforce development is an issue everyone can support and that there is still a great deal of work to be done. Cook agrees and explains that the key in effectively addressing this issue will be recognizing the different training needs for various sectors and adapting to those needs.

With many items left unaddressed during the General Assembly, Gov. Holcomb has called for a special session in May. Both Culp and Cook agree this additional session is needed and should be focused on Indiana’s tax code in light of the recent federal tax changes.
