Crystal Schultz is a director in KSM’s State & Local Tax Group. Crystal has more than 25 years of experience in state and local tax, specializing in sales and use tax. With a strong focus on controversy and consulting, Crystal works closely with the firm’s multistate clients to help identify accurate and efficient solutions to mitigate their overall sales and use tax risk and liability. She is experienced in guiding clients with activity in multiple states through nexus considerations, taxability concerns, voluntary disclosures, and refund opportunities.
Prior to joining KSM, Crystal served as a senior manager on the state and local tax team at a regional business advisory, accounting, and technology firm. In that role, she was responsible for analyzing, researching, and responding to client inquiries nationwide, with a primary focus on sales and use taxes across all state and local tax types. Drawing on her previous experience as a state revenue auditor, Crystal combines a deep understanding of state audit practices with effective defense strategies, enabling her to successfully manage audits while minimizing client risk across multiple industry sectors.
I love the Optimist Creed, especially the lines: “To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own” and “To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.” It’s a powerful reminder to focus on positivity daily!
Crystal received Bachelor of Arts degrees in accounting and business administration from Lakeland University. She has earned the Certified Member of the Institute designation with an emphasis in sales and use tax from the Institute for Professionals in Taxation® (IPT). Crystal has completed the basic and intermediate tiers of the Unclaimed Property Professionals Organization’s (UPPO) Unclaimed Property Certificate Program.
Crystal serves as KSM’s representative on the Business Advisory Council for the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board, Inc., where she collaborates with state tax administrators and industry leaders to shape policy discussions and provide practical perspectives on sales and use tax matters. This role enables her to bring valuable insight back to clients, helping them anticipate changes and align strategies with evolving state requirements.
Crystal is also an active member of IPT, where she serves as a volunteer instructor for the Sales Tax School I program and as a speaker for the institute’s annual symposium. In addition, she is a member of Optimist International and has previously served as president and treasurer of the organization.
