EPA Delays GHG Permitting for Biomass-powered Industries

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that it will defer greenhouse gas (GHG) permitting requirements for carbon dioxide emissions resulting from biomass-powered sources. Manufacturers who utilize biomass as a fuel source for industrial production will receive some relief from the EPA's decision.

IRS Requests Feedback Regarding Excise Tax on Medical Devices

You may have heard about the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010, designed to make changes to the previously passed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. But you may not have heard that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is inviting the public to comment on issues that have arisen from this act.

AICPA's Financial Reporting Executive Committee Comments on Exposure Draft

On December 28, 2010, the Financial Reporting Executive Committee (FinREC) of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) commented on the FASB's and IASB's (the boards) draft standard on leases, as presented in FASB's Exposure Draft of a proposed Accounts Standards Update (ASU) Leases (Topic 840).

There’s been much speculation as to what Congress would do about the 2010 estate tax repeal and the scheduled 2011 return of the tax at higher rates and a lower exemption. The Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 has finally given us an answer, but only through 2012.

Indiana Dips Its Toe in the Choppy Waters of Unclaimed Property

In 1998 when I worked for a large, national firm, my boss walked into my office and asked, "How would you like to be our escheat expert?" I vaguely recalled hearing the "term" escheat when I was in law school but couldn't have remembered if someone had paid me. Some of our biggest clients were starting to be audited for unclaimed property, and we needed to assemble a national team to help them.
