Healthcare Reform Update: Employer Mandate, Consumer Assistance and Premium Assistance Credit

The Internal Revenue Service issued Notice 2013-45 formalizing the one-year delay of the mandate that applicable large employers must offer adequate health coverage to their full-time employees and the information reporting required under IRC Sec. 6055 and 6056.

Will the Minimum Wage Change?

President Obama recently called for the hourly minimum wage to increase from $7.25 to $9. Although Congress has acknowledged the need to review this issue, they have yet to hold a hearing this year to discuss it. And due to other pressing matters – immigration reform, the farm bill and the continuing budget resolution – a vote on minimum wage will likely not happen in the near future.

Stark Violators Can Self-Report to Minimize Penalties

In 2010, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) enacted a Self-Referral Disclosure Protocol authorizing all healthcare companies in violation of the Stark Law to self-report their own wrongdoing in order to minimize the financial risk of violating the Stark regulations. So far, the settlement amounts have proven to save these healthcare companies substantial sums of money.

Highlights from the 2013 Michigan Trucking Association Conference & Annual Meeting

Troy Hogan, a director in Katz, Sapper & Miller’s Transportation Services Group, attended the 2013 Michigan Trucking Association’s Conference & Annual Meeting in Traverse City, Michigan on August 8 and 9. Approximately 36 carrier and allied member companies were represented at the conference.

Indiana Leads the U.S in Manufacturing Output Ratio

A recent article by USA Today shows that the state of Indiana leads the nation in manufacturing output. Indiana contributed approximately 28.2% of the total U.S. manufacturing output for 2012. Indiana’s manufacturing also contributed approximately $84.15 billion to the U.S. GDP during 2012, which makes it the 6th highest (on a dollar basis) in the country for manufacturing contributions to GDP.

Indiana Manufacturing - Retrenching for the Future

The preliminary results of the 2013 edition of the annual Indiana Manufacturing Survey finds many companies indicating they are tightening their financial belts in an effort to retrench for the future. In the 2012 survey results, Hoosier manufacturers were more optimistic, with 44 percent considering their financial performance as "healthy." But when asked the same question in 2013, just 33 percent considered themselves as such.

Indiana #1 in U.S. for Manufacturing Jobs

The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) recently reported that Indiana has the highest percentage (16.4%) of manufacturing-related jobs out of every state in the nation. Indiana also experienced the 3rd highest growth in manufacturing jobs from December 2009 through March 2013.

Medical Equipment and Supplies Exempt from Indiana Sales Tax

The Indiana Department of Revenue’s information bulletin #48, effective July 1, 2013, has been changed to include an exemption from sales and use tax for blood glucose monitoring supplies. The bulletin specifies that blood glucose monitoring supplies are exempt from sales and use tax, whether they are sold pursuant to a prescription or are sold by a licensed practitioner to a patient.
