Manufacturers Successfully Fighting High Unemployment

Unemployment is undoubtedly high in the U.S., and many wonder if there is hope of bringing it down anytime soon. On the flip side, many manufacturing companies are having a hard time finding workers. Those two statements don't seem to make sense when stated back-to-back.

The problem is that the world of manufacturing has become technology-based instead of assembly line-based, and companies need skilled workers capable of operating high-precision machinery. These types of high-tech skills generally aren't possessed by the older manufacturing workforce. However, many young individuals attending trade schools to pick up these skills are finding that they have a job offer before they even graduate, as reported by CNN.

CNN reports that the "demand for graduates is so intense that last year's CNC (a machine operations certification course at Wilbur Wright trade school in Illinois) graduating class scored 100% job placement." In addition, the "starting salary for new hires averages about $40,000 per year, with the potential to jump up to $55,000 to $65,000 in less than two years."
