Indiana Manufacturing Job Growth Leads the Nation

Posted 7:02 PM by

The future for manufacturing in Indiana looks bright. Per the Northwest Indiana Times, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 2.8 percent employment gain over 2013 as Indiana gained 13,700 factory jobs over the past 12 months, leading the nation in manufacturing job growth and edging out second-place Texas by 700 jobs. Despite the recent growth, however, Indiana has still not returned to its pre-recession levels: With approximately 502,800 manufacturing jobs, we are still short by 10,000 jobs as the pre-recession high was 513,200.

Still, these numbers are encouraging. On a national level, manufacturing is experiencing slight contraction according to IndustryWeek’s recently released U.S. 500, an annual ranking of America’s largest public manufacturers.

In the U.S. 500 report, Cliff Waldman, senior economist for the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation, predicts moderate growth for U.S. manufacturing through 2015. “As state leaders continue to work hard to attract job opportunities for Hoosiers, I anticipate the trends will continue.” This, coupled with Indiana’s already manufacturing-friendly environment, points to continued job growth through the next year.

If we see yet another year of near 3% growth, Indiana will top its pre-recession manufacturing employment, something I think everyone will be excited to see.
