This week, the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) released some data from its forthcoming 2011 Physician Compensation and Production Survey, one the largest physician compensation studies released each year.

Hospital Tax Compliance - Just Got Slightly Easier (For Now)

We just learned of some relief for healthcare tax compliance folks. The Internal Revenue Service just announced that, generally, hospitals are exempt from the requirement to complete Part V, Section B of Schedule H on the Form 990.

A Common Complication with Lease Arrangements/PSAs - Overhead in Multi-specialty Groups

Even though lease arrangements (aka, professional services agreements, or PSAs) for some specialists make financial sense for the individual MDs, an important challenge is figuring out how to integrate these arrangements in a multi-specialty setting.

Progress Lacking on Meaningful Use for Electronic Health Records

A Health Affairs article published last week indicated that only two percent of U.S. hospitals reported having electronic health records (EHR) that would meet the government's meaningful use standards.

Senate Passes 2.2% Medicare Payment Increase

As anticipated, the Senate passed a six-month Medicare payment fix after it became clear no long-term deal would be struck. This latest bill calls for a 2.2% increase in payments to physicians.

New Changes Proposed for Telemedicine Services

On May 26, 2010, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued proposed changes simplifying the credentialing process of practitioners providing telemedicine services. Currently, the originating hospital is responsible for credentialing and privileging each practitioner that provides telemedicine services at their hospital. Under the new rule, the originating hospital can rely on the credentialing and privileging decisions of the distant-site hospital.
