KSM Extends Impact With Largest Community Day Ever and New Time & Talents Program

Posted 3:30 PM by

KSM invests in our communities because we believe it is the right thing to do. While we give back in a variety of ways, both as a firm and as individuals, KSM’s annual Community Day is an opportunity for our team to make a meaningful impact over the course of one work day. Our employees look forward to it every year.

This year’s Community Day was our ninth, and our employees focused their efforts on aiding the homeless, fighting hunger, and providing much-needed manual labor to organizations that serve children and families.

Of our nearly 450 employees, approximately 325 pitched in to accomplish the following:

  • At Indianapolis’ Gleaners Food Bank, more than 230 KSM volunteers packed 8,700 BackSacks, which are provided to children who may not otherwise have much to eat over a weekend. Our volunteers also sorted and packed enough food for 24,327 meals, 31,164 pounds of baby food, and 9,069 pounds of produce. These supplies will be distributed to hunger relief agencies and schools throughout central and southeastern Indiana.
  • KSM’s New York City employees volunteered at Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, the largest emergency food program in the city. Our team of 15 served 788 hot meals (including 300 pounds of BBQ ribs!) and delivered 200 bagged lunches to hungry and homeless New Yorkers.
  • At Martin Park Nature Center in Oklahoma City, our mighty crew of five volunteers cleared everything from small seedlings to a 28-year-old tree to reduce the risk of wild fire. In under three hours, the team removed about 1,000 seedlings and trees. In the afternoon, they worked at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to assemble and pack four large pallets with healthy meals for the state’s chronically hungry children.
  • Cold and rain didn’t stop 21 Fort Wayne employees from working tirelessly all day. The morning’s tasks at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo included raking leaves, clearing garden beds, and writing thank you notes to donors. Work continued in the afternoon at Vincent Village, a homeless shelter, where volunteers raked leaves, winterized a playground, prepped a large room for painting, and cleaned and organized several storage rooms.
  • Fifty-five KSM Consulting employees volunteered with The Villages of Indiana, the state’s largest not-for-profit child and family services agency. Despite rainy weather, a full to-do list of painting, mulching, repairing fences, and cleaning kept the team busy.

The organizations we partnered with were thrilled with the help our employees provided on behalf of the people they serve.

“With the cold and rain, it wasn’t the best day to work outside, but everyone had a smile on their face and did whatever we asked of them,” said Kathy Terlizzi, Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo volunteer coordinator. “We really appreciate their help. They were real troopers and got so much done.”

With our Fort Wayne, New York, and Oklahoma City offices participating this year, it was the first time the impact of KSM’s Community Day extended beyond Indianapolis.

Employees’ individual volunteer efforts are about to get a boost, too, with the introduction of Time & Talents, a new program announced at our firm-wide meeting Oct. 30. Under Time & Talents, KSM will donate $500 to any not-for-profit organization at which our employees volunteer 24 hours or more of their time during a calendar year. This supplements KSM’s matching gift program, which matches individual employee charitable donations up to $500 annually.
