Driver Shortage Continues Throughout Trucking Industry

One of the most talked about topics at every state trucking convention this summer was driver turnover and the overall driver shortage. Leaders across the industry noted serious action must be taken during a panel discussion at the American Trucking Associations' recent Management Conference & Exhibition. With unemployment hovering around 8 percent for quite some time, it’s hard to fathom why any industry would have a turnover rate above, or even, close to 100 percent. Through the second quarter of 2012 driver turnover in the trucking industry reached 106 percent, the highest level since 2007. 

Driver turnover has increased each quarter since 2010 with no signs slowing down. Companies aren’t just scrambling to hire new drivers, but to find ways to retain them long term. Some tactics currently in place include mentoring and bonus programs, with some companies offering to cover the initial cost of truck driving school as long as drivers stay with the company for one year. Statistics show the turnover rate drops to 50 percent for drivers who last one year with one company.
