Dan Sailer

Director, Valuation Services, CPA/ABV, CFA

Dan Sailer is a director in Katz, Sapper & Miller’s Valuation Services Group. He is passionate about guiding clients through their succession alternatives by advising them on estate planning, gifting strategies, employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs), corporate transactions, and other valuation matters. Dan combines his years of experience working with closely held companies with his skillsets of valuation and financial modeling to develop ideas, strategies, and scenario analyses to solve problems and optimize his clients’ goals. Dan also has experience with dispute resolution, litigation support, and valuation of complex capital structures.

Prior to joining the firm, Dan provided corporate financial advisory services to owners and management teams of companies in distressed situations across several industries, specializing in turnarounds and restructurings throughout the Great Recession. He began his career in public accounting and later served as controller of a sixth-generation retail automotive group.

I’ve always been fond of this Warren Buffett quote: “Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” I see its meaning across our clients, throughout KSM, and even in my own life.

Dollars earned for my first loop (I caddied at Fort Wayne Country Club growing up)
Year of my first hole-in-one (a family first!)
State locations of companies I have valued (still seeking AK, AR, HI, ND, and VT)

Dan received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Indiana University. He has earned the Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV) credential, issued by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), and also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation issued by CFA Institute.

Dan is a member of The ESOP Association, the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO), the AICPA, the Indiana CPA Society, and CFA Institute. He is the current president of the Estate Planning Council of Indianapolis, Inc. and is a past president of CFA Society Indianapolis. Dan also serves on the finance committee of New Hope of Indiana, the investment committee of the Benefaction Fund at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, and on the board and finance committee of one of Indiana’s ethanol producers.
