Diversity & Inclusion

Many Perspectives. One Team.

The accounting profession is changing and becoming more complex. Clients expect and deserve more. Employees want to be challenged and grow. At KSM we believe success in all these areas comes from unique perspectives, expansive thinking, and creative problem-solving. Rising to this level doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from an intentional focus on bringing differences together to cultivate a culture of diversity and inclusion.

Diversity at KSM means tapping into the power of our differences to enable our very best work for our clients and support for our communities. Bringing people of different ethnicities, genders, ages, personal beliefs, life experiences, professional backgrounds, and sexual orientations together helps us relate better to our clients and communities as their needs and profiles change. It is about sustaining a culture of many who work as one, with the goal of maximizing firm performance and mutual benefit.

Inclusion at KSM means providing all employees the opportunity to share their voice, work to their greatest potential, and make an impact. It is about building trust among our employees, clients, and communities that comes from respecting and valuing our differences. To do this we foster an environment in which awareness is pervasive, learning is continuous, and meaningful conversations are both inspired and inspiring.

We are proud of our commitment to celebrate how our differences make us better. We continually test our practices, policies, and norms against this commitment, and strive to be better every day.

One Size Does Not Fit All.

As the profile and needs of our clients and employees change, so must our policies, programs, and practices. While our barometer is always fairness and consistency, we know that one size does not fit all. Flexibility is paramount to build and retain a workforce of exceptional thinkers and doers from all walks of life. We have created initiatives with this in mind; here are just a few.

Inspire is a group of leaders from across the firm who come together to explore new ideas and ways to accelerate diversity and inclusion objectives at KSM. With an original focus on gender-balance, the group has broadened its mission to find ways to harness the power of all differences.

We appreciate the value each of our five generations adds to the mission of KSM. Our more experienced professionals have extensive knowledge and deep client relationships. Our earlier-career professionals bring new perspectives and work styles, disrupting our more traditional work environment and practices—in a good way. SURGE was created to facilitate relationships within this younger group and to provide opportunities to connect with other generations within KSM to both maximize collaboration and enrich our culture.

Remote Work

We strive to be our best at KSM. The recognition we’ve received as a consistent winner of Best Places to Work, Best of the Best, and other accolades reflects this. Our commitment to help our people find their personal best when it comes to how they work also exemplifies this drive for excellence. While most still prefer coming into the office for learning, camaraderie, and collaboration, others find that working from home helps them be more efficient and productive. Many enjoy a hybrid of in-office work, balanced with work-from-home days. We get it.

Paid Parental Leave

Let’s face it, starting or growing a family, while joyful, also creates new pressures and stress. You may find yourself asking all sorts of questions: Can I afford to take time off? Will I let down my colleagues? Will my clients be disappointed?

Our answer is simple: You absolutely should be at home with your new child. Work will still be here when you return. Your colleagues and clients will celebrate your news. To help you further, we offer paid parental leave above and beyond our standard benefits package.

It Starts at the Top.

KSM is proud to participate in CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, the largest global CEO-driven business commitment to advance diversity and inclusion within the workplace. Our commitment includes these four actions:

  1. Continuing to make our workplace a trusting place to have complex, and sometimes difficult, conversations about diversity and inclusion.
  2. Implementing and expanding unconscious bias education.
  3. Sharing best—and unsuccessful—practices, to both teach and learn from others.
  4. Creating and sharing strategic inclusion and diversity plans with our partner group.
