2017 Indiana Legislative Update

My colleagues often criticize me for what they call my “Dad humor,” or my weakness for a well (or badly) timed pun. I’ll plead guilty as charged, especially as I think about some of the challenges that faced the Indiana General Assembly this past legislative session.

James Carville famously advised during the 1992 presidential election: “It’s the economy, stupid.” This adage proves to be sound political advice 25 years later, as the state budget approved in the closing wee hours of the 2017 General Assembly had a decidedly economic bent to it.

In Our Post-Recession Economy, What Does a Job Really Mean?

Getting economic development right is complex. Many factors come into play: workforce quality, infrastructure, industry mix, corporate citizenry, quality of place and creation of new jobs. It is not just the number of jobs that influence decisions about if and how much in incentives a locality might offer a business to set up shop.

The Best and Worst Economic Moves of the 2016 Session

Attracting and keeping jobs in Indiana is a hot topic every legislative session, especially in an election year. It’s ironic, then, that in 2016 the Indiana legislature took very few actions specifically designed to address economic development issues.
