20 Year Tax Abatements – A Good Idea?

Things are transpiring fast and furiously at the Indiana State House. One possible spin-off of the current push to overhaul business personal property tax is to provide local governments the authority to award tax abatement up to 20 years. My first inclination when I hear a proposal like this is to consider whether it’s a good idea or a bad idea.

Indiana EDGE Credit in Jeopardy

When it comes to the Indiana legislature, the conventional wisdom is that lawmakers are not inclined to take on too many big issues during a short legislative session (such as this year). Someone forgot to share that message with the only people who matter: Indiana legislators.

Changes to Indiana Sales Tax Policy on Maintenance and Warranty Contracts

The Indiana Department of Revenue recently announced significant changes to its sales tax policy regarding sales of optional maintenance and warranty contracts. The policy change was announced via an updated Information Bulletin #2, effective Jan. 1, 2013.

Indiana Dips Its Toe in the Choppy Waters of Unclaimed Property

In 1998 when I worked for a large, national firm, my boss walked into my office and asked, "How would you like to be our escheat expert?" I vaguely recalled hearing the "term" escheat when I was in law school but couldn't have remembered if someone had paid me. Some of our biggest clients were starting to be audited for unclaimed property, and we needed to assemble a national team to help them.
