Mark Bernstein, partner-in-charge of Katz, Sapper & Miller’s New York office, will serve as a panelist at the Opal Group’s Family Office Winter Forum. Taking place on March 1 in New York City, the forum will feature interactive panel discussions led by consultants and financial managers and will cover a variety of topics, including asset protection strategies, investment styles for family offices, tax-efficient portfolio construction, challenges of the trustee-beneficiary relationship and more.

Bernstein’s session, “Philanthropy and Its Role in the Family Office,” will focus on the unique dynamics and challenges many family offices face when dealing with philanthropy matters, including the following:

  • Successful models for addressing competing philanthropy priorities in a family office
  • Developing philanthropy acculturation for younger family members
  • Appropriate times to consult a “philanthropy expert”
  • Changes in philanthropy style and approach

Bernstein specializes in tax and financial issues relevant to family offices and high net worth individuals. As the firm’s partner-in-charge of KSM Charitable Foundation Services, Bernstein has extensive knowledge of tax law and other regulations governing private foundations and provides consultation on their grant management process. He also provides innovative strategies to some of the most respected and successful real estate owners in the country.

In addition to panel discussions, attendees will hear from keynote speaker Marc Lasry, chairman, CEO and co-founder of Avenue Capital Group, an investment firm specializing in distressed and undervalued securities, bank loans and trade claims.
