Unexpected Costs in an EHR Implementation

Posted 7:25 PM by

According to a recent article published in Medical Economics, physicians are frequently finding costs of implementing an electronic health record (EHR) system to be above and beyond their original budget for the project. EHR's are becoming much more common and this article provides some good tips for setting an accurate budget for the implementation process.

There are many factors involved with EHR implementation that can affect a practice's bottom line, such as:

  • Capital expenditures for hardware, software and installation
  • Training of staff (including potential overtime pay)
  • Future IT support and system maintenance
  • Loss of productivity

If all these factors aren't taken into consideration and budgeted for properly, physicians can quickly find themselves blowing their budget and having to invest more capital and hire more staff than originally planned. Before beginning an EHR selection and implementation, it is wise to seek assistance from someone who specializes in physician practice consulting. Setting your budget correctly in the beginning could make all the difference in a successful and painless implementation.
