Exposure Draft on Leases Released

The US Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) have published for comment the following joint proposals to improve the financial reporting of lease contracts: FASB Exposure Draft (ED), Leases (Topic 840) and IASB ED, Leases (also released was a Basis for Conclusions by the IASB). If adopted, the proposals will have a significant impact on the balance sheets of those in the manufacturing and distribution industries.

Progress Lacking on Meaningful Use for Electronic Health Records

A Health Affairs article published last week indicated that only two percent of U.S. hospitals reported having electronic health records (EHR) that would meet the government's meaningful use standards.

A new incentive in the recent healthcare legislation was established for companies that have invested in expenses related to therapeutic discovery projects. Applications will only be accepted only through July 21, 2010, so the time to act is now.

Senate Passes 2.2% Medicare Payment Increase

As anticipated, the Senate passed a six-month Medicare payment fix after it became clear no long-term deal would be struck. This latest bill calls for a 2.2% increase in payments to physicians.

New Changes Proposed for Telemedicine Services

On May 26, 2010, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued proposed changes simplifying the credentialing process of practitioners providing telemedicine services. Currently, the originating hospital is responsible for credentialing and privileging each practitioner that provides telemedicine services at their hospital. Under the new rule, the originating hospital can rely on the credentialing and privileging decisions of the distant-site hospital.

Joint FASB and IASB Statement of Convergence Update

In November 2009, the Financial Accounting Standards Board and the International Accounting Standards Board reaffirmed their commitment to improving U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) through convergence. The convergence could have a significant impact on the manufacturing and distribution industries.
