New Data on Physician Malpractice Claims

Posted 4:00 AM by

New information is out this week on malpractice claims from the New England Journal of Medicine and it shows that neurosurgeons are more likely to be sued than any other specialty.

The Los Angeles Times "Booster Shots" blog has a nice write up on this matter here.

These articles act as a reminder that appropriate malpractice coverage and how to deal with the stress and potential fallout of lawsuits is an important part of physician practice strategic planning.

From the LA Times piece, here are the top five most likely to be sued specialties:

  1. Neurosurgery
  2. Cardiovascular surgery
  3. General surgery
  4. Orthopedic surgery
  5. Plastic surgery

The other end of the spectrum had these least likely to be sued specialties:

  1. Psychiatry
  2. Pediatrics
  3. Family medicine
  4. Dermatology
  5. Pathology

A final note on this subject is that lawsuits can be impactful in considering overall value in terms of potential or contingent liabilities for healthcare business valuation purposes.
