Do You Know the Value of Your Transportation Company?

The transportation industry thrived in 2018. While signs point to some correction in 2019, the state of the market is currently strong, bank capital is readily available, and private equity firms are eager to get into the industry. These factors and more make this an appealing time for some owners to consider selling. Others are looking closely at growth opportunities such as investment in new technology and equipment.

How a Per Diem Program Can Help Drivers and Carriers Save in Taxes

The Tax Reform and Jobs Act (TCJA) was the most comprehensive overhaul of the tax code in our lifetime, if not ever. We are just weeks away from the first tax filing deadline for returns that are fully impacted by these law changes. One change that could drastically impact truck drivers is the inability to deduct unreimbursed business expenses. As a result of this adjustment, many carriers have implemented per diem programs as a way to get tax free dollars to drivers. Conversely, companies that have not instituted per diem programs might have disappointed drivers as we get closer to the tax filing deadline, and drivers realize that this deduction is a thing of the past.

Enjoying the Ride: Optimizing the Trucking Industry Surge

From the middle of 2017 to the middle of 2018, trucking was on a roll. With industry growth of three percent – a seismic number compared to other industries – trucking outpaced GDP. Leaders agree the heydays are unlikely to continue at such an impressive pace, and a reversion to the mean is expected, but the industry is still well-poised to maintain a positive outlook going forward.

Miller and Schuh to Present Lease Accounting Update at Iowa Motor Truck Association Member Webinar

Jason Miller and Shane Schuh with KSM’s Transportation Services Group will present “Lease Accounting Update and its Impact on the Transportation Industry” to members of the Iowa Motor Truck Association on Dec. 13. In this webinar conversation, Miller and Schuh will detail key changes brought about by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) Accounting Standards Update No. 2016-02, Leases (Topic 842), which goes into effect Dec. 15, 2018 and is the first comprehensive overhaul in lease accounting in approximately 40 years.
