The ESOP Association is a national non-profit membership organization that serves approximately 2,500 employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) companies, professionals with a commitment to ESOPs, and companies considering the implementation of an ESOP. The 11th Annual Tri-State ESOP Conference, hosted by the Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky chapters, provides an opportunity for ESOP professionals to discuss current issues surrounding employee ownership.
Mark Flinchum will co-present a session entitled, “Staying Calm, Cool and Collected: ESOP Accounting and Cost Basis Calculations” along with Jackie Salmon of OneAmerica. The session will cover the basics of accounting for an ESOP as well as connecting the financials with the tax return with the allocation. In addition, the session will cover the calculation of the cost basis of the ESOP stock, in particular the adjustments that apply to S-corporations. Finally, the session will also explore reporting of the cost basis to participants and the tax decisions for participants at the time of distributions that relate to the cost basis.
